Gorilla Glass 5 is the latest addition to the Corning’s scratch resistant Gorilla Glasses. As most of you have known that Gorilla Glass is a scratch resistant and damage resistant glass (to certain level) that is mainly used in Smartphones and Tablets. It is developed by the American Glass manufacturer Corning. It is the most popular and widely used scratch resistant glass used on Smartphones. The competitors of Gorilla Glass are Dragontrail Glass and NEG Glass. Out of these two scratch resistant glasses the main competitor of Gorilla Glass is Dragontrail Glass.
Dragontrail Glass is also a very tough glass that is resistant to scratches. It is developed by a Japanese company called Asahi Glass Co., and therefore it is also known as Asahi Dragontrail Glass.
There is also an advanced or better version of Dragontrail Glass which is called Dragontrail X glass. This glass is more tougher and stronger than normal Dragontrail glass. Dragontrail X glass can tolerate more stress and compression than the regular Dragontrail glass. It is almost 30 percent stronger than the original or regular Dragontrail glass.

Gorilla Glass 4 is up to two times stronger than it competitive glasses and is able to survive drops on sharp objects and surfaces 80 percent of the time. Gorilla Glass 4 is also thinner than the previous Gorilla Glass 3 and Gorilla Glass 2. Gorilla Glass 4 has been used on many high-end smartphone and you can view the complete list of smartphones using Gorilla Glass 4 by going through the link below.
What is New in Gorilla Glass 5?
Gorilla Glass 5 is the upcoming version of the Gorilla Glass that is tougher and stronger than its previous versions. It will be used in high-end smartphones and you will be able to see it in action on smartphones display at the end of year 2016.
Gorilla Glass 5 is so strong that it is able to survive drops on rough and sharp surfaces 80% of the time from a height of 1.6 meters. This is a remarkable achievement from Corning because in a research it is found that most of the users drop their smartphones from waist or shoulder height on to the ground. Gorilla Glass 5 is up to 4X or four times better in drop failure test as compared to it competitive glasses.
Other properties such as scratch resistance, optical clarity and touch sensitivity will remain the same as it is with other Gorilla Glasses. Also Gorilla Glass 5 will be as thinner as the Gorilla Glass 4. It is rumored that upcoming Samsung’s flagship smartphone Samsung Galaxy S8 will have Gorilla Glass 5. The tablet that is most likely to get Gorilla Glass 5 is Microsoft Surface Pro 5.
